USING MAPTALK


• When you click on the 'TALK on MAP' link, you arrive at a screen, divided in three sections:
  1. The left square section, where typed texts appear after sending by you or your counterparts.
  2. The right rectangular section with the text 'Who's here?'
  After a successfull login your name will appear under 'Who's here?' This section is also the 'door' to the private boxes.
  3. The bottom section. Used for logging in, typing and sending your texts.

  3. BOTTOM SIDE
  On the bottom, you find a text: 'Login?' ,a text entry field and a 'login' button.
  Most times the cursor is in the login field and you can just type in your login name. In some browsers you have to put your cursor on the text entry field and left click with your mouse.
  Fill in a name and given and 'enter' on your keyboard or put your mouse cursor on the button and left-click on the 'login' button. When your login name is accepted (there is no one else with that name present on the system, if there is, you get a message and have to start again), you see:
  'loginname ready, enter...', and the 'enter' button.
  After left-clicking with your mouse on the 'enter' button you see the text entry field in the bottom of the screen.
  You can start typing your text. In some browsers you have to put the cursor, with the mouse, in the text entry field and press the left button. After typing your text and pressing 'enter' on your keyboard, or clicking on the 'send' button, your text is send and will appear in the square section.
  The cursor will reappear in the text entry field and you can type again.
  Etc. etc. You will see your text appear in the square box, at the bottom or the top of the screen, depending on the browser you use.

  2. RIGHT SIDE
  On the right rectangular side of the screen you see:
  Who's here?
  After logging in you see, under 'who's here?' the login names of the persons in the 'public box'.
  Thereunder you see:
  Private talk?
  click here
  When you want to have a private box, you can left-click with your mouse on 'here'.
  After left-clicking on 'here' two entry fields and an 'Enter' button become visible.
  You need a boxname and a password. They are given to you on request, by email. Fill them in and left-click on the 'Enter' button. When there is no one with the same name in the private box, you see a message: 'To go private, click here'. Do so by left-clicking and you are in your private box.

  The right rectangular box has one more item: The display function.
  Under the private stuff you find the:
  Display mode:
  bottom > top
  Explanation: Some browsers do not accept 'normal' input. When this happens (i.e. you do not see your own typed text or you do not see the other persons texts appear in the square box) it sometimes helps to click on 'bottom > up'.
  By doing so the text input in the square field starts coming from the top of the screen.
  When you have a very old browser (Netscape 1 or Internet Explorer 1) the system will not work because frames are not supported by them.

  1. LEFT SQUARE
  Here typed and send texts appear from bottom to top or reversed. The scrollbar on the right side of the rectangle can be used to examine a complete session, to cut and paste, etc.

  TIMEZONES
  

• When trying to make an appointment with someone or a group to talk, you have to fix date and time. Do not use your local time like GMT, EST, etc., when making an appointment for a conversation. It could be confusing and you can easily miss someone on this 24 hour planet. Better use UTC (Universal Time Coordinate) instead of someone's local time.
  To find out the UTC and see the local times of most places in the world go to The World Clock
  At the bottom of the list of cities you find the current UTC.
  Now you can calculate a time that is convenient for you all.
  

  PRIVACY
  

• Keep in mind: The public chatroom is open to all; there is no anonimity. Privacy between participants is only in the 'private box'.
  
• Ofcourse I can be reached by email for an appointment. Tell me in UTC when you want to talk with me. However, on every FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH in the year 2000, on 20:00:00 UTC I will be online for 20 minutes and see what's going on.
